Lean On Me

The Veterans' Administration participated in a national program a few years back to hang art in the hallways at VA Medical Centers/Hospitals. I remember it stirred huge controversy about money better spent on Veteran’s services and in spite of the studies behind the program many used the program implementations as a political ploy. Being part of the military system and veteran myself for all my life, I can remark on how oblique VA hospitals can be. I thought the program was marvelous and always looked forward to actually pondering the art.

My local VA hospital is going through some renovations and funding for the program was cut significantly, but they still managed to keep some art on the walls. I was at an appointment the other day, and when I come in from the bus stop into the building, I always pass a series of B/W photos of farm life. This one always stops me in my tracks; "Three Sheared Sheep" by André Kertész.

I'm not a farm girl, and my only affinity for sheep comes in the forms of wool and lamb chops. I thought of. First I was just reacting to some subtleties in the image; the slight smile, the closeness of the sheep, peaceful and safe, the warmest of an ever so slight sepia quality to it. When I got home and saw the kidz all huddled up together in the bedroom though I’d never made the connection before it struck me to what emotion it brought up…family.

PS: The fact that the sleep is kinda naked being freshly sheared don't hurt either ♥.

  2. That is so sweet! I can see how you would make that connection!

I also have to agree that the VA Hospitals are seriously lacking in atmosphere, perhaps what they should do is ask local artists to display some of their work that is for sale in the VA and if someone purchases the work a portion of the proceeds go to the VA, and the rest to the artist? It would be a win-win situation.
