Helping Out Cats and Dogs in Hawaii
By ELAINE GLUSAC

Miss Fido while on vacation? In Hawaii, the Maui Humane Society offers two new fixes for pet-lonely travelers: afternoon visits with the shelter’s cats and dogs, and the opportunity to escort a pet off the island for adoption.

Offered every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, the Helping Paws Visitor Program invites visitors, as well as islanders, to walk the dogs, bathe the puppies and brush the cats.

For those willing to do more to encourage pet adoptions, the nonprofit recently started its Wings of Aloha program, in which visitors to the island can volunteer to escort a dog or cat off the island on their return flight and back to waiting families on the mainland. The Maui Humane Society pays to ship pets, but saves on the airfare if a pet is linked to an existing airline reservation.

Travelers need only contact the society with their flight information and meet a shelter staff member at the airport in Kahului for check-in when the animal is transferred to the airline for cargo shipping. Flyers have no responsibility beyond check-in; the pet is later picked up by a partner agency at the destination.

The program is designed to disperse animals to a larger pool of adopting families. “We have a lot of the same problems you see everywhere with too many pets and not a lot of homes,” said the shelter’s chief executive, Jocelyn Bouchard. “But we have fewer homes, all our counties are separated by an ocean, and the population base is over on Oahu, so we have a limited potential for homes here.”

Since April, the shelter has shipped more than 200 animals from Hawaii to new homes in the mainland United States and Canada.

  1. This is absolutely the smartest, most unique method for placing pets in forever homes. Mom was very excited when she read about it thinking it could even be used within the U.S. Thanks for visiting our blog. We get really excited when we meet new friends.
